Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Rinse the okra thoroughly under running water. Trim the ends and cut them into 1/2 inch pieces.
Breading
- 2
Mix the Breading
In a bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well until fully combined.
- 3
Coat the Okra
Dip the cut okra pieces into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Then, dredge them in the cornmeal mixture, ensuring each piece is evenly coated.
Frying
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra pieces to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried okra from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot as a snack or side dish.
