Method

Preparing the Crabs

  1. 1

    Clean the Crabs

Rinse the live blue crabs under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Use a brush if necessary to scrub the shells gently.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Boiling Water

In a large pot, combine 4 liters of water and 1 cup of salt. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat.

  3. 3

    Add the Crabs

Once the water is boiling, carefully add the cleaned blue crabs to the pot. Be cautious to avoid splashing hot water.

  4. 4

    Season the Crabs

Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of Old Bay seasoning over the crabs, and add the garlic cloves, bay leaves, and black peppercorns to the pot.

  5. 5

    Cook the Crabs

Cover the pot and allow the crabs to cook for about 15-20 minutes or until they turn a bright orange color.

Preparing the Dipping Sauce

  1. 6

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt 1 cup of butter until fully liquefied.

  2. 7

    Add Seasoning

Once the butter is melted, stir in 1 teaspoon of garlic powder and 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. Mix well until combined.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve the Crabs

Using tongs, carefully remove the crabs from the pot and place them on a serving platter.

  2. 9

    Add Dipping Sauce

Serve the melted garlic lemon butter alongside the crabs for dipping. Cut the lemon into wedges for garnish.
