Filo Pastry

Nut Filling

Butter

Honey Syrup

Method

Preparation of Nut Filling

  1. 1

    Chop Nuts

In a food processor, combine the walnuts and pistachios. Pulse until finely chopped, but not ground. Transfer to a bowl.

  2. 2

    Mix Nut Filling

Add the sugar and ground cinnamon to the chopped nuts. Mix well until everything is combined evenly.

Layering the Baklava

  1. 3

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Prepare Pan

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.

  3. 5

    Layer Filo Pastry

Place one sheet of filo pastry in the prepared baking dish and brush lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering about 8 sheets, brushing each layer with butter.

  4. 6

    Add Nut Filling

Spread half of the nut mixture over the layered filo pastry.

  5. 7

    Continue Layering

Add another 4 sheets of filo, brushing each with butter, then top with the remaining nut mixture. Finally, layer 8 more sheets of filo, again brushing each with butter.

  6. 8

    Cut Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

Baking and Syrup

  1. 9

    Bake Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.

  2. 10

    Prepare Syrup

In a saucepan, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

  3. 11

    Pour Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the baklava. Allow it to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
