Prepare the Coffee

Brew Espresso
Brew 1 cup of espresso coffee using your preferred method. Allow it to cool slightly.

Mix Coffee and Liqueur
In a shallow dish, combine the brewed espresso with the coffee liqueur (if using). Set aside.
Prepare the Mascarpone Mixture

Whisk Egg Yolks
In a bowl, whisk the 4 egg yolks with 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar until the mixture is thick and pale.

Add Mascarpone
Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.

Whip the Cream
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form.

Combine Mixtures
Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully incorporated.
Assemble the Tiramisu

Dip Ladyfingers
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, making sure they are soaked but not soggy.

Layer the Tiramisu
In a 9x9 inch dish, create a layer of dipped ladyfingers, followed by half of the mascarpone mixture. Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.

Chill
Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve the Tiramisu

Dust with Cocoa
Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with cocoa powder and add dark chocolate shavings if desired.

Slice the tiramisu into squares and serve chilled.
