Method

Preparing the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Prepare Black Beans

In a large bowl, drain and rinse the canned black beans. Use a fork or potato masher to mash them until smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the mashed black beans. If using, add the egg for better binding. Mix everything until well combined.

  3. 3

    Shape Patties

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty.

  4. 4

    Chill (optional)

Refrigerate the patties for about 30 minutes if you have time. This helps them hold together better while cooking.

Cooking the Burger

  1. 5

    Cook Patties

Heat a non-stick skillet or grill over medium heat. Add a little oil if desired. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are heated through and have a nice crust.

  2. 6

    Add Cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of pepper jack cheese on top of each patty and cover the skillet or grill to melt the cheese.

Assembling the Burger

  1. 7

    Prepare Buns

Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster.

  2. 8

    Assemble the Burger

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the black bean patty with melted cheese, sliced tomato, avocado, and any additional toppings like ketchup and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.

  3. 9

    Serve

Serve the hippy burger immediately with your choice of side dishes.
