Espresso

Method

Preparing Espresso

  1. 1

    Brew the Espresso

In an espresso machine, add 2 tablespoons of espresso coffee grounds to the portafilter. Pack the grounds evenly and securely. Attach the portafilter to the machine.

  2. 2

    Extract the Espresso

Start the machine and let the water flow through the coffee grounds. This should take about 25-30 seconds to yield 1 ounce (30 ml) of espresso. Pour the espresso into a cup.

Preparing Milk

  1. 3

    Heat the Milk

In a small saucepan, pour 1 cup of milk. Heat over medium-low heat until steaming, but do not boil. Stir gently to avoid scalding.

  2. 4

    Froth the Milk

Using a frother, whisk the heated milk until it is frothy and has doubled in volume. If you don’t have a frother, you can use a whisk or shake the milk in a jar with a lid until frothy.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 5

    Combine Espresso and Milk

Slowly pour the frothed milk over the brewed espresso in the cup. Hold back the foam with a spoon to control the amount of foam you want in your latte.

  2. 6

    Add Sugar (Optional)

If desired, stir in sugar to taste before serving.
