Method

Prepare Rice

  1. 1

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of white rice and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.

Make Chuck Patty

  1. 2

    Form and Cook the Patty

In a bowl, mix ground chuck, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Form into one large patty or two smaller ones. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patty for 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness or until cooked to your preference.

Prepare Eggs

  1. 3

    Cook the Eggs

In a small pan, melt butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook them to your desired doneness (sunny side up, over easy, etc.). Set aside.

Make Demi-Glace

  1. 4

    Prepare the Sauce

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine beef broth and soy sauce. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Once the broth mixture is simmering, whisk in the cornstarch slurry and black pepper. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

Crispy Onion Straws

  1. 5

    Prepare and Fry Onion Straws

Slice the large onion into thin rings. Soak the onion rings in buttermilk for about 10 minutes. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Dredge the soaked onion rings in the flour mixture. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Assemble the Dish

  1. 6

    Serve the Loco Moco

On a plate, create a bed of steamed white rice. Place the cooked chuck patty on top, followed by the eggs. Drizzle with the homemade demi-glace and top with crispy onion straws. Garnish with chopped green onions. Serve warm.
