Method

Preparation of Onions

  1. 1

    Sauté the Onions

Slice the medium onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Sauté for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

Assembling the Patty Melt

  1. 2

    Prepare the Sandwich

Take 2 slices of rye bread and place a slice of Swiss cheese on each. Add a generous portion of the sautéed onions on top of the cheese. Place another slice of Swiss cheese on top of the onions and top with another slice of rye bread.

Cooking the Patty Melt

  1. 3

    Toast the Sandwich

In the same skillet used for the onions, add a little more butter if needed and heat over medium-low heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side until golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes on the other side until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted to perfection.

Serving

  1. 4

    Serve

Once both sides of the sandwich are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove from the skillet. Let it sit for a minute, then slice in half and serve hot.
