Method

Preparing the Mushrooms

  1. 1

Clean the button mushrooms by wiping them gently with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt. Do not wash them under water as they can absorb moisture and become soggy.

  2. 2

Trim the stems of the mushrooms if necessary to ensure they are even.

Making the Batter

  1. 3

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 4

Slowly pour in the Guinness beer while stirring the mixture with a whisk or fork until the batter is smooth and has no lumps.

  3. 5

Let the batter sit for about 10 minutes to thicken slightly.

Frying the Mushrooms

  1. 6

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, it's ready.

  2. 7

Dip each mushroom into the batter, making sure it is evenly coated.

  3. 8

Carefully place the battered mushrooms into the hot oil, a few at a time, without overcrowding the pan.

  4. 9

Fry the mushrooms for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown, turning them occasionally for even cooking.

  5. 10

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried mushrooms from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 11

Serve the hot, crispy Irish beer battered mushrooms on a platter with a side of ranch dressing for dipping.
