Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Meatball Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Shape the Meatballs

Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet.

  3. 3

    Bake the Meatballs

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes or until browned and cooked through.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Season

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 6

    Finish the Sauce

Remove from heat and stir in chopped fresh basil. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 7

    Assemble the Sandwiches

Slice the sub rolls in half. Place 3-4 meatballs on each roll and top with marinara sauce.

  2. 8

    Add Cheese

Layer provolone cheese slices on top of the meatballs and sprinkle with grated Romano cheese.

  3. 9

    Melt the Cheese

Place the assembled sandwiches in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
