Method
Simple Syrup (if making fresh)
Make 1:1 Simple Syrup
Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar fully dissolves and the mixture is clear. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Cocktail
Rinse or ignore (optional)
If you like a slightly more aromatic Old Fashioned, add a few drops of water or a teaspoon of syrup to the glass first. This step is optional and typically omitted if using a large ice cube.
Build the drink
Place the orange peel and bitters (Angostura and optional orange bitters) into a rocks glass. Add the 0.25 oz simple or Demerara syrup.
Add whisky and ice
Pour 2 oz bourbon or rye whisky into the glass. Add a large ice cube (or several large ice cubes) to chill and slightly dilute the drink as you stir.
Stir
Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for about 20–30 seconds (10–15 revolutions) until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted—aim for about 15–25% dilution from the added ice over stirring time.
Garnish and serve
Express the orange peel over the glass by holding it with the outer zest facing down and giving it a firm twist to spray oils onto the surface. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it into the glass. Optionally add a maraschino cherry on top. Serve immediately.
