Mornay Sauce

Method

Mornay Sauce Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Roux

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden and bubbly, forming a roux.

  2. 2

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the whole milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add Cheddar and Seasoning

Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Set aside.

Tots and Assembly

  1. 4

    Cook Tater Tots

Preheat your oven according to the package instructions for the frozen tater tots. Spread them out on a baking sheet and bake until golden and crispy, usually about 20-25 minutes.

  2. 5

    Assemble the Dish

Once the tater tots are cooked, remove them from the oven and layer the diced roasted turkey breast evenly over the tots. Pour the Mornay sauce generously over the turkey and tots.

  3. 6

    Add Toppings

Sprinkle the diced tomatoes, crumbled applewood-smoked bacon, and additional shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Return the assembled dish to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  4. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from the oven and garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve hot and enjoy your Hot Brown Smothered Tots!
