Patty Melt Ingredients

Method

Patty Melt Directions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the onions, sprinkle with salt, and sauté until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

While the onions are caramelizing, shape the ground beef into an 8-ounce patty. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patty

In another skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the beef patty and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired doneness. Add the American and Swiss cheese on top of the patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

In the same skillet used for the patty, add the rye bread slices. Grill each slice for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Once the bread is toasted, place the cheeseburger patty on one slice of bread, top with the caramelized onions, and then cover with the second slice of bread.

  5. 5

    Serve

Slice the patty melt in half and serve immediately while hot.
