Banh Mi Components

Spicy Thai Cilantro Sauce

Method

Preparation of Ingredients

  1. 1

    Prepare the Cucumber

Wash the cucumber and slice it thinly lengthwise. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Pickled Carrots

If using store-bought pickled carrots, ensure they are ready. If making at home, julienne carrots and soak them in vinegar, sugar, and salt for at least 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Fresh Cilantro

Wash the fresh cilantro under cold water and pat dry. Set aside for garnish.

Sardine Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Mix Sardine Filling

In a bowl, combine the canned sardines (with sauce), lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Gently mash with a fork until combined but still chunky. Set aside.

Spicy Thai Cilantro Sauce Preparation

  1. 5

    Blend Sauce

In a blender or food processor, combine fresh cilantro, Thai chili peppers, garlic, fish sauce, and sugar. Blend until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Assembling the Banh Mi

  1. 6

    Cut the Baguette

Slice the French baguette in half lengthwise, ensuring not to cut all the way through.

  2. 7

    Fill the Baguette

Spread a generous amount of sardine filling inside the baguette. Layer with cucumber slices, pickled carrots, and fresh cilantro.

  3. 8

    Add Sauce

Drizzle the spicy Thai cilantro sauce over the filling to taste.

  4. 9

    Serve

Close the baguette gently, slice into manageable pieces, and serve immediately.
