Method
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Onions
Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
- 2
Form the Patties
While the onions are cooking, season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form it into two equal-sized patties.
- 3
Cook the Patties
In another skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place 2 slices of Swiss cheese and 2 slices of American cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
- 4
Toast the Bread
In the same skillet used for the patties, add 1 tablespoon of butter and toast the whole wheat bread slices until golden brown on both sides.
- 5
Assemble the Patty Melt
On two slices of toasted bread, place a cheese-covered patty, top with the caramelized onions, and then place the remaining slices of toasted bread on top to form a sandwich.
- 6
Serve
Slice the patty melt in half and serve immediately with your favorite sides.
