Preparation Instructions
1. Make the Meatballs
In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs (about 1 inch in diameter).
2. Cook the Meatballs
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.
3. Prepare the Marinara Sauce
In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until onion is translucent. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
4. Make the Cheese Sauce
In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add milk, whisking until thickened. Stir in asiago cheese and salt until melted and smooth.
5. Assemble the Sandwich
On each slice of Italian bread, place meatballs, spoon marinara sauce over the top, then drizzle with cheese sauce. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top.
6. Bake the Sandwich
Place the assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
