Cabbage Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Cabbage
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage. Place the whole head of cabbage in the boiling water and cook for 5-7 minutes until the outer leaves soften.
- 2
Peel Off Leaves
Once the cabbage has softened, carefully peel off the outer leaves and set them aside. Return the cabbage to the pot and repeat until you have about 12-15 leaves.
Filling
- 3
Prepare the Filling
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, diced onion, minced garlic, egg, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- 4
Stuff the Leaves
Take one cabbage leaf and place a generous spoonful of filling at the base. Fold the sides over and roll up tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
Sauce and Assembly
- 5
Prepare the Sauce
In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper until well blended.
- 6
Assemble the Cabbage Rolls
Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls.
- 7
Bake the Cabbage Rolls
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour. Remove the foil for the last 15 minutes of baking to let the top brown slightly.
