1. Prepare the Beef Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into 4 equal-sized patties.

2. Cook the Patties

Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

3. Add Cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

4. Toast the Buns

While the burgers are cooking, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

5. Assemble the Burgers

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, then the cooked patty with melted cheese. Top with tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, and mustard to taste. Cover with the top half of the bun.

6. Serve
