Prepare the Spice Rub
In a bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin. Mix until well combined.
- 2
Season the Pork
Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, making sure to cover it evenly. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight in the refrigerator.
Cooking
- 3
Set Up the Slow Cooker
Place the seasoned pork shoulder in the slow cooker. Pour the apple cider vinegar and chicken broth over the meat.

Cook the Pork
Cover the slow cooker and set it to low heat. Cook for 8-10 hours or until the pork shreds easily with a fork.
- 5
Shred the Pork
Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.
- 6
Mix with BBQ Sauce
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, add the BBQ sauce, and stir to combine. Let it cook on low for an additional 30 minutes to meld the flavors.
