Pasta Preparation
- 1
Cook the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Cheese Sauce Preparation
- 2
Make the Roux
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, whisk in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and lightly golden.
- 3
Add Milk
Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly, about 5-7 minutes.
- 4
Incorporate Cheeses
Reduce heat to low. Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 4 ounces of cream cheese until melted and smooth. Season with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.
Combine and Bake
- 5
Combine Pasta and Cheese Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until fully coated.
- 6
Prepare Breadcrumb Topping
In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil until combined.
- 7
Assemble and Bake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the topping is golden and crispy.
