Method

Mushroom Fries Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Mushrooms

Clean the Portobello mushrooms with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Remove the stems and slice the caps into fry-shaped strips, about 1/4 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Battering Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well. Gradually add water while whisking until the batter is smooth and has a thick consistency.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a deep-fry thermometer for accuracy.

  4. 4

    Batter the Mushroom Strips

Dip each mushroom strip into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off.

  5. 5

    Fry the Mushroom Fries

Carefully place the battered mushroom strips in the hot oil in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Use a slotted spoon to remove the mushroom fries from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Keep warm while you fry the remaining batches.

Dipping Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Mix the Dipping Sauce

In a small bowl, combine ranch dressing and chipotle sauce. Stir well to combine and adjust the flavor to taste.
