Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. 3

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with more melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering about 8 sheets.

  4. 4

    Add the Nut Mixture

Sprinkle a portion of the nut mixture over the layered phyllo. Continue layering phyllo sheets (about 4-5), brushing each with butter, followed by more nut mixture. Repeat this process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo sheets (8-10 sheets).

  5. 5

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. 6

    Prepare the Syrup

While baklava is baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat, simmering for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  7. 7

    Finish the Baklava

Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it. Let it sit for several hours or overnight to absorb the syrup before serving.
