Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Mix the Dough
In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water while mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- 2
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Filling Preparation
- 3
Prepare the Filling
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground pork, shredded cabbage, grated carrot, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, chopped green onions, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Forming Lanterns
- 4
Roll the Dough
After resting, divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 3 inches in diameter.
- 5
Fill the Lanterns
Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over to form a semi-circle and pinch the edges to seal.
- 6
Shape the Lanterns
Gently bend the semi-circles into a lantern shape and pinch the ends together to secure.
Decoration
- 7
Add Color and Shine
Mix the red food coloring with a small amount of water to create a paint. Use a brush to carefully paint the lanterns. Sprinkle edible gold dust for an extra festive touch.
Cooking
- 8
Steam the Lanterns
Place the lanterns in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper. Steam for 15-20 minutes until the dough is cooked and the filling is hot.
