Patty Melt Ingredients

Method

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Sauté the Onions

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. If using, add sliced jalapeños and mushrooms, and sauté for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the Beef Patty

In the same skillet, mold the ground beef into a patty and season with salt and black pepper. Cook the patty over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the patty to melt.

  3. 3

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place two slices, buttered side down, in the skillet. Layer with sautéed onions (and jalapeños and mushrooms if using), then place the patty with melted cheese on top. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.

  4. 4

    Grill the Patty Melt

Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula while cooking to ensure even grilling.

  5. 5

    Serve

Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve warm with your favorite side.
