Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic.

Cooking the Sauce

  1. 2

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft.

  2. 3

    Add Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for an additional minute, until fragrant.

  3. 4

    Cook the Meat

Add the ground beef and pork sausage to the pan. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

  4. 5

    Deglaze the Pan

Pour in the red wine and scrape the bottom of the pan to release any browned bits. Let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes.

  5. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Broth

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and bay leaf.

  6. 7

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Finishing Touches

  1. 8

    Add Cheese and Herbs

Remove the bay leaf, then stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil just before serving.
