Prepare the Dashi Broth

Make the Dashi
In a pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add kombu (if using) and bonito flakes. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, then strain the broth to remove solids.
Combine Ingredients

Mix Miso with Broth
Reduce heat to low and add 3 tablespoons of miso paste to the hot dashi broth. Use a whisk or a ladle to dissolve the miso paste completely.

Add Tofu and Vegetables
Add the cubed tofu, chopped green onions, and dried wakame to the pot. If using optional add-ins like mushrooms or carrots, add them now as well.
Finish and Serve

Heat Through
Allow the soup to heat gently for 2-3 minutes without boiling to ensure the tofu warms up and the flavors meld.

Ladle the miso soup into bowls and garnish with additional green onions if desired. Serve immediately.
