Dry Ingredients

For the Frosting (optional)

Method

Preparing the Cake

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or non-stick spray.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and matcha green tea powder until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, cream the softened unsalted butter with the granulated sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

    Combine with Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Frosting (optional)

  1. 8

    Prepare the Frosting

In a mixing bowl, beat together the powdered sugar and softened unsalted butter until smooth. Gradually add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until you reach a spreadable consistency.

  2. 9

    Add Matcha

Mix in the matcha green tea powder until fully incorporated and the frosting is a uniform green color.

  3. 10

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, spread the frosting between the layers and on top of the cake as desired.
