Prepare the Edamame
If using frozen edamame, remove them from the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes. If using fresh edamame, rinse under cold water.
Cooking

Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil over high heat.

Cook Edamame
Once the water is boiling, add the edamame pods to the pot. Cook for 4-5 minutes for fresh edamame or 3-4 minutes for frozen edamame, until the pods are tender and bright green.

Drain and Season
Using a colander, drain the edamame pods and return them to the pot. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of salt (and red pepper flakes if using). Toss to coat the pods evenly.
