Method

Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add the sliced onions, and sauté until they are caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the Beef Patty

In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Form into two patties. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they are cooked to your desired doneness. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

  3. 3

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the other slices of bread, buttered side facing out.

  4. 4

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet, grill each sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.

  5. 5

    Serve

Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve hot with your favorite condiments.
