Flan Base
Caramel
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Cook the Caramel
Continue to cook without stirring until the mixture turns a golden brown color. This should take around 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- 3
Coat the Flan Mold
Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Allow it to cool and harden.
Flan Mixture Preparation
- 4
- 5
Pour Mixture into Mold
Pour the blended mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold.
Baking
- 6
Prepare the Water Bath
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold in a larger baking pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
- 7
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center of the flan comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Chill
Once baked, remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving
- 9
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert the mold onto a serving plate and let it sit for a few moments until the flan releases.
- 10
Drizzle with Caramel
Drizzle any remaining caramel sauce from the mold over the flan before slicing and serving.
