Calamari

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Squid

If not already cleaned, clean the squid, remove the head, and cut the body into rings.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

  3. 3

    Set Up Dredging Station

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. In another bowl, place the breadcrumbs.

  4. 4

    Dredge the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the calamari in batches for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Sauté Garlic

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 1 minute).

  2. 8

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Add the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and sugar to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

  3. 9

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 10

    Finish with Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil and remove from heat. Keep warm until ready to serve with calamari.
