Rice Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl, cover it with water, and let it soak for about 30 minutes. After soaking, drain the rice and set it aside.

  3. 3

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the soaked rice and 1 tsp of salt. Stir once gently, then cover the pot with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes.

Flavoring

  1. 4

    Prepare the Cumin

In a small pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, or until they become fragrant and start to crackle.

  2. 5

    Combine Flavor with Rice

Once the cumin seeds are ready, fluff the cooked rice with a fork and gently fold in the sautéed cumin seeds and oil or ghee mixture, ensuring the rice is evenly coated.

  3. 6

    Serve

Transfer the cumin rice to a serving dish, and enjoy it as a side dish or as a base for your favorite curry or stew.
