Fries

Method

Fries

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and peel the russet potatoes. Cut them into fries, about 1/4 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Soak the Fries

Place the cut fries in a bowl of cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch.

  3. 3

    Dry the Fries

Drain the fries and pat them dry with paper towels to remove any moisture.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add the dried fries to the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per batch.

  6. 6

    Drain and Season

Remove the fries from the oil and drain on paper towels. While hot, sprinkle with salt to taste.

Brown Gravy

  1. 7

    Melt the Butter

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter.

  2. 8

    Make the Roux

Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

  3. 9

    Add the Broth

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Stir in the soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Bring to a simmer and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Assembly

  1. 11

    Combine and Serve

Place a generous portion of fries on a plate and ladle the hot brown gravy over the top. Serve immediately.
