Method
Preparing the Patty
- 1
Mix the Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until just combined.
- 2
Form the Patties
Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties, making them slightly larger than your bread as they will shrink while cooking.
- 3
Cook the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.
Grilling the Onions
- 4
Slice the Onion
Thinly slice the large onion.
- 5
Sauté the Onions
In the same skillet used for the patties, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8-10 minutes until they are soft and caramelized. Remove from heat.
Assembling the Patty Melt
- 6
Prepare the Bread
Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
- 7
- 8
Top and Grill
Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown, then carefully flip and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden.
- 9
Serve
Remove from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
