Pickle Spears

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pickles

Drain the dill pickle spears from their brine and pat them dry with paper towels. This step is essential to ensure that the batter adheres properly and the pickles do not get soggy.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until well mixed.

  2. 3

    Add Buttermilk

Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients while whisking until you achieve a smooth batter. The consistency should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or a heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a deep-fry thermometer to check the temperature.

  2. 5

    Coat the Pickles

Dip each pickle spear into the batter, allowing any excess batter to drip off. Make sure they are thoroughly coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Pickles

Carefully place the battered pickle spears into the hot oil, working in batches if necessary. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain the Fried Pickles

Once fried, remove the pickles from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Hot

Serve the country fried pickle spears hot with your choice of dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or spicy ketchup.
