For the Patty Melt

Method

Preparing the Patty Melt

  1. 1

    Mix the Beef and Onions

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, salt, and black pepper. Mix until evenly incorporated.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Shape the beef mixture into a flat patty, about 1/3 pound in weight. Make sure it is slightly larger than the Texas toast, as it will shrink while cooking.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patty

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patty in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip the patty and place 1 slice of American cheese on top. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the patty reaches your desired doneness.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Texas Toast

While the patty is cooking, spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Once the patty is cooked and the cheese is melted, remove it from the skillet. Place the patty on one slice of Texas toast (buttered side up), then top with the second slice of Texas toast (buttered side out).

  6. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

Return the assembled sandwich to the skillet. Grill over medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Serve

Remove the patty melt from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
