Pasta
Tomato Sauce
Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat.
- 2
Cook Pasta
Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions (usually 8-10 minutes) until al dente.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, reserve a cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.
Making the Tomato Sauce
- 4
Sauté Onion and Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed canned tomatoes and tomato paste. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Mix well and bring the sauce to a simmer.
- 6
Simmer Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.
- 7
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained pasta to the sauce in the skillet. Toss gently to combine, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if the sauce is too thick.
- 8
Serve
Serve the pasta hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
