Preparation
- 1
Rinse the Rice
Place the 1 cup of white rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.
- 2
Soak the Rice (Optional)
If you have time, soak the rinsed rice in a bowl of water for 30 minutes. This step is optional but can help the rice cook more evenly.
Cooking
- 3
Combine Ingredients
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed (and soaked, if applicable) rice, 2 cups of water, and 1 tsp of salt.
- 4
Bring to a Boil
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Watch closely to prevent it from boiling over.
- 5
Simmer the Rice
Once the water reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let it simmer for 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.
- 6
Check for Doneness
After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat. Check if all the water has been absorbed and if the rice is tender. If not, cover and let it sit for an additional 5 minutes.
- 7
Fluff and Serve
Using a fork, fluff the rice gently to separate the grains. Serve hot as a side dish or base for your favorite stir-fry or curry.
