Method

Prepare the Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set aside.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Whisk until well mixed.

  2. 3

    Add Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry ingredients while whisking until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The batter should be of a thick consistency.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a large, deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 365°F (185°C).

  2. 5

    Coat Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow excess batter to drip off.

  3. 6

    Fry Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
