Pasta

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4-6 quarts of water to a boil. Add salt to taste.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside.

Homemade Meat Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

  2. 5

    Brown the Beef

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  4. 7

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Sauté Garlic

In a separate pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

  3. 10

    Simmer the Marinara

Allow the marinara sauce to simmer for about 15-20 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.

Serving the Dish

  1. 11

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Toss the cooked spaghetti with either the homemade meat sauce or marinara sauce until well coated.

  2. 12

    Plate and Serve

Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil or grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
