Method
Cooking the Pasta

Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4-6 quarts of water to a boil. Add salt to taste.

Cook Spaghetti
Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside.
Homemade Meat Sauce Preparation

Sauté Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

Brown the Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

Simmer the Marinara
Allow the marinara sauce to simmer for about 15-20 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
Serving the Dish

Combine Pasta and Sauce
Toss the cooked spaghetti with either the homemade meat sauce or marinara sauce until well coated.

Plate and Serve
Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil or grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
