Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meatball Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet.

  3. 3

    Bake the Meatballs

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the meatballs for 20 minutes or until cooked through.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté the Onion and Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 6

    Combine Meatballs and Sauce

Once the meatballs are done baking, add them to the marinara sauce. Let them simmer together for an additional 5 minutes.

Assembly

  1. 7

    Toast the Sub Rolls

While the meatballs are simmering, cut the sub rolls in half and toast them in an oven for about 5 minutes until golden brown.

  2. 8

    Assemble the Subs

Place 3-4 meatballs on the bottom half of each toasted sub roll. Spoon marinara sauce over the meatballs and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

  3. 9

    Melt the Cheese

Return the assembled subs to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
