Method

Cooking the Meat

  1. 1

    Brown the Meat

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and ground pork. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks.

  2. 2

    Add Aromatics

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for another 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.

Making the Sauce

  1. 3

    Add Tomato Ingredients

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. If using, pour in the red wine.

  2. 4

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens.

Finishing Touches

  1. 5

    Add Fresh Herbs and Cheese

Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the chopped fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

  2. 6

    Serve

Serve the meat sauce over your favorite pasta, or store it in pint or quart containers for future use.
