Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Ingredients

Chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Pour in the canned whole tomatoes along with their juice. Crush the tomatoes with a spoon or potato masher. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 4

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens and deepens in flavor.

  4. 5

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the fresh basil leaves. Adjust seasoning to taste if needed.
