Cooking Beans
- 1
Prepare the Pinto Beans
Rinse the pinto beans under cold water to remove any dirt or impurities.
- 2
Cook the Beans
In a medium pot, combine the rinsed pinto beans and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 1-2 hours, or until the beans are tender. Stir occasionally and add more water if needed to keep the beans submerged.
- 3
Season the Beans
Once the beans are tender, stir in 1 teaspoon of salt and mix well. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before mashing.
Making Refried Beans
- 4
Sauté the Aromatics
In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

- 6
Season the Beans
Stir in 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of chili powder, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix well to combine and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until heated through.
