Preparation

  1. 1

    Making the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. Add the vegetable oil and warm water. Stir until the mixture forms a dough.

  2. 2

    Kneading the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Rolling out the Dough

After resting, divide the dough into smaller balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll out each ball into a flat circle about 1/8 inch thick.

  4. 4

    Frying the Sopapillas

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place one rolled-out dough circle into the hot oil. Fry until it puffs up and turns golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Serving

Serve the sopapillas warm, dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with honey if desired.
