Pasta

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, bring 4-5 quarts of water to a rolling boil. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook the Mostaccioli

Add the mostaccioli (penne pasta) and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.

Making the Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. Then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

  2. 5

    Brown the Meat

Add 1 pound of ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Once the sauce has thickened, add the drained mostaccioli to the skillet. Toss to combine the pasta with the sauce, ensuring it is evenly coated.

  5. 8

    Serve

Serve the mostaccioli hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil if desired.
