Add Garlic
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Combine Tomatoes and Broth
Add the canned whole tomatoes (with their juice) and the vegetable broth to the pot. Stir well to combine.

Season the Soup
Add salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and sugar to the pot. Stir to incorporate.

Simmer
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer uncovered for about 20 minutes.

Blend the Soup
Using an immersion blender, carefully blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the soup in batches to a countertop blender.

Stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves and let the soup cook for another 5 minutes.

If desired, stir in the heavy cream for a richer flavor and creamier texture. Heat through but do not boil.
