Method
Biscuits
- 1
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3
Cut in Butter
Add the unsalted butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 4
Add Buttermilk
Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until just combined.
- 5
Shape Biscuits
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently just until it comes together. Pat into a 1-inch thick round and cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter.
- 6
Bake
Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Sausage Gravy
- 7
Cook Sausage
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground breakfast sausage until browned and cooked through. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks.
- 8
Make Roux
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir well for about 1 minute to create a roux.
- 9
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk while continuously stirring to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
- 10
Season Gravy
Add salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Stir to combine and remove from heat.
