English Muffin Ingredients

Method

Directions to Make English Muffins

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Shape the Muffins

Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1 inch thickness. Use a round cutter to cut out muffins. Place them on a floured baking sheet.

  4. 4

    Final Rise

Cover the cut muffins with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  5. 5

    Cook the Muffins

Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Cook the muffins for 7-10 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.

  6. 6

    Serve

Split the muffins in half, toast them if desired, and serve warm with butter and your favorite preserves.
