Fried Green Tomatoes
Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In one bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a second bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- 3
Bread the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, dredge it in the flour-cornmeal mixture, ensuring it is well-coated. Set aside on a plate.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).
- 5
Fry the Tomatoes
Carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the hot oil, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Once fried, remove the tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm with Homer’s Favorite Buttermilk Dressing.
